Countryside's Middle school,
consisting of grades 6-8, currently
has 59 students. The average class size is 8-15 students. The Middle
School
program includes several long-term projects, with an emphasis on
learning how to do research and learn new material. A focus is also
placed on time management and study skills. There are four multi-age
homerooms, each led by one of our Middle School teachers.
Students rotate to classrooms
for different subjects.
Literature/Writing (English),
Science, Social Studies, World
Language, and Math classes meet daily. Math is taught by ability level.
Currently, Middle School
students are given the choice of studying
Beginning Spanish, Intermediate Spanish, Beginning
Chinese, or Intermediate Latin.
Other opportunities offered are
Math Counts, Odyssey of the Mind,
and
Science Olympiad.
Physical Education class is
offered three times weekly, and Music class
is scheduled twice weekly. Students
also experience a trimester each of Art,
Study Skills, and Performing Arts.
After school activities include
competitive team sports (girls
volleyball, co-ed soccer, girls basketball and boys basketball) a chess
team, chorus, and a school band.
Countryside also facilitates
Middle School peer advisory groups to
encourage
the students to reach out and support one another. Middle School
students
also go on an annual overnight camping trip. The camping trip
usually
takes place at the end of September or early October.
The
students
plan all aspects of the camping trip, including equipment, food, and
activities.
Through team activities and nature students, students and
teachers
are able to bond as a group.
And what Middle School would be
complete without a school dance?
Countryside
has two Middle School dances (for Countryside students). We also
have
plays, musicals and a talent show, ensuring a variety of outlets and
activities
for all Middle School students.
