Chess Team takes 3rd at ChessFest

Posted November 24, 2009

The Countryside Chess Club took 3rd in team competition at ChessFest on Sunday, November 22 at Jefferson Middle School in Champaign. Over 147 students, representing more than 25 schools in the area, competed in ChessFest.

Countryside won the 3rd place trophy in the team competition, and seven players won individual honors, despite the fact our roster was a bit depleted due to the absence of four top players, three of whom were playing in a chess tournament in Chicago.

Kindergartener Zach won 3rd place in the Kindergarten section. First graders Zachary, Terry and Mary won 3rd, 5th and 6th place honors, respectively in their division. Fifth grader Matthew placed 5th in his division, and seventh graders Cole and Brandon placed 2nd and 4th, respectively. Masashi, Julian and Arjun all placed highly in their sections, but just missed out on individual awards on tie-breaks.

Every player contributed to the team award, and everyone represented their school well—we are proud of them!
