Seventh grader Shannon took 1st place this summer at the Illinois State Fair for her bread and butter pickles! She competed in the Open Class (all ages, all experience levels).
As a member of Dreamcatchers 4H club, her pickles as well as tomato salsa were part of her Food Preservation project. Shannon began canning last year, starting with strawberry jam and dill pickles. Those two along with her bread and butter pickles received a Blue ribbon at the Champaign County 4H Fair (ages 8 to 18).
From there, Shannon entered the Open Class at the Champaign County Fair where her bread and butter pickles placed third. In the Illinois Blue Ribbon Culinary Contest at the Illinois State Fair, they placed first out of seven entries in the bread and butter category. Not only did Shannon receive a lovely big blue ribbon, she received prize money as well.
She particularly enjoys working with the food items; cutting up and preparing the cucumbers or other food in order to preserve it. Congratulations, Shannon!
